About Mara-Is

I am Jacobus Daniel Marais; my background is primarily working the machine manufacturing business, working as a project manager. I’m a visual artist, working primarily in acrylics and pen/watercolour, creating figurative, humorous interpretation of the everyday, drawing inspiration from artist like Dr. Seuss and Quintin Blake. I am motivated by the idea of highlighting elements usually considered insignificant, there seems to be an infinite number of things that’s considered normal yet has great potential to tell a story, in the same way that the creation of machines is not often considered. I try to connect with people by showing the ordinary expressions and experiences from a new angle. Over the course of my professional career, I trained multiple people and elevated them to new positions in the organization to strike a balance between building a career (individual growth) and benefit to the organization (creating an environment where the team is skilled, flexible and willing to tackle new projects).

Quotes
“Simplicity if the ultimate sophistication” – Leonardo da Vinci. Things should not be over complicated; I’m satisfied with a situation when a complicated problem can be solved with a simple solution. I strive for simplicity and perfection in my life and what I do.

I have worked in the industrial machine manufacturing industry from a young age, working part time in the industry since I was 13.
Proficient in nesting and operation of Laser cutters, arc welding, steel profile planning and cutting, and assembly of corn milling machines.
Skilled in managing and operating a fitting and turning department, including conventional lathes, milling machines, CNC lathes, Siemens G-coding and machine calibration. At Roff industries, I managed a team of 4 individuals in my department, planning tasks and ensure good quality of work produced.
During 2022 I upgraded the equipment in the department by installing new machinery to improve overall productivity and quality. Upgrading equipment involved serious market and industry research, finding the right machines involved an understanding of both the department of operation in the industry, as well as the machine distribution market, analysing brands and post-sale services.
